Plant Profile: Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea are South American in origin and were named in honour of the French explorer, Louis Antoine de Bougainville.

If you’re looking for a plant with showy colours, you can’t go past bougainvillea. With just a little care it will bring blooms to your garden for months of the year.

Watering: Regular watering will keep these plants happy and healthy

Soil: Bougainvillea aren’t fussy when it comes to soil type, as long as it is well drained.

Feeding: Its best to use a low nitrogen, high potassium fertilizer on Bougainvillea. Fertilise in Spring.    

Pruning: These will grow up to 12m+ if left unpruned but can be trimmed to size; dwarf forms are available. Don’t be afraid of giving them a good haircut – they’re very hardy and will bounce back.
